3/20 Wings vs Wild Game Day Updates

The Red Wings are preparing to take on "fierce rivals" (according to NBCSN) the Minnesota Wild tonight in Detroit at 7:30 PM EST.

For more injury updates, see yesterday's off day post.

Here's the news for today...

Patrick Eaves will not be playing tonight. He got hit in the jaw with a puck yesterday in practice, and while x-rays revealed there were no fractures, both of his temporomandibular joints (The joints that connect your jaw (mandible) to your skull (temporal bone) are sprained.

Gustav Nyquist has been recalled from Grand Rapids and will play in Patrick Eaves' spot on the line with Andersson and Cleary. Nyquist played against the Rivermen in Peoria last night in a 4-1 Griffins loss.

“We sent him to Peoria to play the game last night, gave him a six-hour bus ride,'' coach Mike Babcock said. “Let him sleep for a bit and we’ll let him play tonight, see how mentally tough he is. That’s all part of the training to be a Red Wing.”

This is the 4th time Nyquist has been called up to the Wings 4 times so far this season and 0 goals, 1 assist, 7 shots on goal and is a +1.

“He’s got some skill,” Babcock said. “He’s, obviously, a real good player. He’s led everywhere he’s ever played in scoring. The problem with the NHL is you gotta come up and grab hold of something.”
“We called Andy up for a game. He’s still playing, just because he grabbed hold of something. That’s what Gus has to do...So, if you’re Gus and you get in there tonight and you do great things, guess what happens?''

Carlo Colaiacovo had his shoulder re-evaluated and now believes he's about a week away from returning. Cola has missed 26 games this season, but says conditioning won't be an issue.

“I can tell you my conditioning is not going to be an issue,” he said. “I've been skating real hard and training real hard both on and off the ice. I'll be pretty close to where I need to be. … I'm confident in my abilities that when I get out there the rust will settle pretty quick and I'll be back to where I need to be.”

Johnathan Ericsson didn't practice today and Babbock said is was for "personal reasons" but that he will play tonight.
